Biophilic Design

The Biophilia hypothesis suggests that humans have an inherent affinity or genetic disposition to connect with nature.  With increased urbanisation and technology leading to a greater disconnection, Biophilic design aims to create more opportunities in our daily lives to connect with nature, by incorporating direct and indirect elements into the buildings that we inhabit.  In addition to creating an aesthetic element, research studies confirm evidence of psychological and physiological benefits including greater general wellbeing, lower stress and anxiety levels, improved healing capacity and increased creativity and productivity levels. Our designs include:

  • Creating seamless connections between indoor and outdoor spaces

  • Layouts that include spaces for connection and sanctuary

  • Indoor planting and natural features

  • Use of natural materials, patterns and textures

  • Maximising air quality and flow

  • Cohesive external landscaping

  • Green walls and roofs
